Drawing on today’s headlines, Arctic Fire is a fiction-based thriller that is just one step away from becoming reality. A nice teaser line to hopefully get the reader’s interest and buy the book, but is any of it true or is it just good writing from a vivid imagination? A great book should always leave the reader wondering just where facts end and fiction begins.

I’ll take a little guessing but not the mystery away from the story and give you a few hints into what is true and what’s not.

Below are some of the highlights from Arctic Fire where you may have your doubts as to, is it live (real) or is it Memorex? Some of you will get the advertising joke, the rest of you who don’t will just have to look it up on the internet much in the same I did while researching the book.

The facts I came across are both fun and fascinating, and to the best of my knowledge-true. Hopefully you’ll pick up the book and enjoy it and be piqued with curiosity and do a little digging on your own.

Official Mission Statement: A rescue mission to retrieve two down astronauts who crash landed on an alien world. Hidden Objectives: One, determine if the spacecraft crashed due to mechanical failure of if it was brought down by hostile alien fire. John Williams’ lovely and moving score for the sixth Star Wars film brings thirty years of collaborating on George Lucas’ beyond-popular intergalactic franchise to a close. (Is this really the end of Star Wars? Can’t Lucas and Williams work together on a prequel to these prequels? Let us hope so, and that Jar Jar Binks is nowhere near it.) As this music accompanies the most exciting Star Wars film in many a moon, the soundtrack itself is more fun, more evil, more nasty and bumpy. Many of the heroic, anthemic themes woven throughout Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith will necessarily be familiar to any fan of the series, from the “Imperial March” to the main theme. It’s remarkable how stirring the latter can be, no matter how many times you’ve heard it, and even for those who do not have all their money invested in S.W. memorabilia. There is a lot of new music here, and the lush, extensive range of both Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra is on display, most notably in the menacing, percolating “General Grievous” and the rousing “New Hope” end theme. –Mike McGonigal
