Funn-e-Pages.jpg Thingpart by Joey Allison Sayers The old switcheroo. The reversal. The complete one-eighty. Joey Allison Sayers is a master of leading the reader down one path and then yanking the rug out from under them. Her comic, Thingpart, has been updating regularly since 2005 and contains nothing but the best in terms of situational and absurdist comedy. thingpart2.jpg Sayers' art is uncomplicated, but like the now-defunct Perry Bible Fellowship the art in Thingpart is able to convey characters' complicated emotions and nuances with relatively simple figures, gestures, and scenes. Although her comic draws comparisons to PBF, XKCD, Pictures for Sad Children and others, her style is definitely her own. thingpart4.jpg Most strips are one-offs, featuring somewhat indistinct characters caught in compromising, or at least silly, situations that they will, inadvertently, handle poorly. There are a few recurring characters such as God (envisioned as a floating cube with eyes) and the Amazing Helper: a super-hero with the mundane (but practical) power of actually being able to help people in a realistic sense. thingpart5.jpg One of her favorite devices to use is the "zoom-out" where the last panel shows more information than the previous three and re-contextualizes the contents, leading to a consistently satisfying punchline. This is a very dry and boring way to say that Sayers is really good at making simple, funny comics that will keep you coming back.
